There are ways to reduce the amount of money spent on groceries to save more. Many people can save a large sum of money by carrying out a task they may not even be aware of.
Keep reading because it's going to get better!
We are all aware of extreme couponing and cash rebate apps, but what other unusual methods can we use to purchase groceries at a lower price?
What many people won’t tell you is that there are ways to save money that you may not have thought of.
Best of all, you don’t have to clip coupons if you don’t want to or don’t have time to.
Let’s look at some crazy ways to save money on grocery shopping.
It is a simple way you can start doing each week you go shopping, and it will save you money!
Think about it this way; many people succeed in their goals because they do things differently than what others expect. The same can be said about the way you grocery shop!
Think outside of the box and stop following the grocery shopping expectation and wasting your hard-earned money.
What are the cheapest groceries to buy?
The cheapest grocery items are usually canned goods, frozen foods, and dry pantry staples. It's not uncommon for these to be 50% off or more occasionally!
- Canned Goods: These can often be found on sale in a BOGO (buy one get one) deal, where you pay full price for one, can and get the second half off.
- Frozen foods: These are great when it's too hot to cook outside or you're craving something cold for dessert. They also tend to be on sale often!
- Dry pantry staples: This includes things like flour, bread crumbs, nut butter, canned beans, etc. These are usually on sale and can be quite cheap if you buy them in bulk during the holidays when many brands offer deals.
What should I eat when broke?
If you are broke, you can eat cheap groceries.
Canned goods are the cheapest and easiest to prepare, but they may not be healthy for you in large amounts. You should only eat canned foods once a day or so, if possible, because of the high sodium content. Always read the ingredients in the can and stay away from high sugar and salt content.
Frozen food can also be cheap and easy to cook, but it's best when you have a freezer.
Supermarkets can also be a good place to find cheap groceries because they often offer specials on items that are nearing their expiration date.
Native grocery stores may not carry many processed foods. However, they may still sell staple ingredients like rice, beans, vegetables, etc., and these shops are usually cheaper than your average supermarket as well!
So, what are these crazy ways to get cheap grocery shopping you should start doing today?
You are about to find out!
Shop Liquidators
What are liquidators?
Liquidators are companies that purchase good and products from closing companies with the intent to resell.
Liquidators, sometimes known as grocery outlets, are an amazing place to save money grocery shopping. Many people think that these stores are only filled with dented cans and expired food.
This couldn’t be further from the truth. While many foods are close to expiring (and some are expired), you can find many great foods that are still in date.
There are even foods that have excellent dates that companies have stopped selling or the packaging has changed on. If there are one of these stores in your area, visit it. You’ll be surprised at what you find.
Grocery outlets and other liquidators are one of the best places to grocery shop on a budget!
Many benefits of shopping at grocery outlets or liquidator stores and one of my favorites are buying organic products and diapers!
Some companies have email and they offer weekly sales on their product which will save you even more.
If you are worried about their return policy, know that these companies do offer a return policy on products.
They are not in the business of selling you junk, and they want to make sure you are a happy returning customer.
Look for Extreme Markdowns
Throughout many grocery stores, you’ll find many extreme markdowns. Stores will mark down meat, produce, and bakery items that are close to the date. These are still great items.
You can freeze the meat for later use or use that day. The same goes for the produce and baked goods.
Don’t be afraid of these items if you know you will use them immediately or freeze them for later.
Find out when your store puts these items out and what day they mark down meat.
Know the Truth About Expiration Dates
This is my favorite tip because not many people know about this, and it also reduces food waste! About 20% of food waste is due to expiration dates.
Guess what?
Expiration dates only started being added to food in the 1970s. Expiration dates on milk were added in the 1930s. Think about that for a moment.

Also, what’s the deal with expiration, sell-by/use-by, and even best-by dates? It’s all very confusing.
So what is “Sell By” date?
The sell By date shows when the manufacturer should stop selling this product and for the companies to ensure they are selling the best quality food.
What is “Best by” or “Best if used by” or “Use by”?
These terms show the estimated date when the food will no longer be at its freshness or highest quality but don't guarantee that it will go bad.
You will not get sick after eating the food after this date. You might notice a difference in quality.
Obviously, you want to pay attention to expiration dates when it comes to things that could make you very sick, such as milk, eggs, and meat.
You will see dates that can be ignored regarding things like cereal, canned vegetables, etc.
These are dates that promise the freshness and quality of the food. The food may lose some of its nutritional value if it goes by that date, but it’s still perfectly safe to eat.

Go Beyond Grocery Stores
Last but not least, grocery stores aren’t the only place to get food. A great example is Dollar Tree. Many people think that Dollar Tree only has poor quality food.
This is so wrong.
Dollar Tree often gets in shipments of name-brand foods. At the time of this article, the company has recently carried General Mills cereals, Pop-Tarts, Keebler products, and even Cool Whip. The dates are also good for these products.
Conclusion
Many people may find these tips crazy, but they can save you so much money. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box to feed your family. From experience, I will tell you that shopping gets easier, and you will see your saving grow.
